Not one, but two Archiproducts awards. Looking back on a great evening in Milano last week, where the Bloom outdoor chair was awarded in the categories, best outdoor and best sustainable. Bloom is designed by Amsterdam based furniture designer Peter van de Water for Dutch furniture brand Banne, At a great evening in the atmospheric Padiglione Visconti venue at Via Tortona, Peter received the Awards in the midst of a more than respectable field of international top designers and brands.

The Substitute is a Dutch organization that connects, inspirers and informs about sustainable alternatives in the field of interior design. It was inspiring to be past of the jury and to select the winner for Substitute awards together with jury members:

Another nomination for Bloom, the outdoor chair designed for Banne, made out of recycled plastic. This after being selected earlier by Rosanna Orlandi’s Guiltless plastic and being shortlisted for the Dezeen award. Now this nice surprise. A nomination by Archiproducts, received during the Orgatec 2022 in Cologne. Fingers crossed!

Celebrating 5 years Gustav

5 years ago, Label vandenberg launched the Gustav easy-chair, a design made by Peter van de Water. For designer Peter van de Water it all started with folding a piece of cardboard to create the inviting and recognizable shape that defines the Gustav easy-chair. In 5 years time, the Gustav family has grown into a complete and very successful serie by re-sizing and reshaping the original folding principle into dining chairs, barstools and now even an outdoor version. We are looking forward to see what the next 5 years will bring!

One new addition is the outdoor version of the original Gustav easy chair which had a soft release at the design studio of Peter van de Water during this years edition of GLUE Amsterdam.

In September this year the second edition of GLUE Amsterdam took place, 4 Days of sun, design, friends and drinks. Cascando and furniture designer Peter van de Water, have a longrunning and successful collaboration. Their shared history of decades underlines their connection, you could say they share each others DNA. During GLUE Amsterdam, they presented a fine selection of designs from the past, the present and the future. As a brand, Cascando offers one of a kind products for a hybrid work environment. These products distinct themselves by a unique functionality and a modern, refined design. Together with colleague designer Robert Bronwasser, Peter van de Water is responsible for a significant part of the Cascando collection. A collaboration that is cherished by both and was celebrated by this presentation.

Besides the presentation with Cascando, Peter van de Water also showed existing and new designs for other clients such as Label vandenberg, Banne, and Gispen. One of these was the last year introduced Bloom outdoor lounge chair for Banne. This design made out of recycled plastic, was selected by the famous Milanese galleria Rossana Orlandi for their Guiltless plastic award. Bloom was also presented by Banne at their own presentation together with interface at the hotel Arena. Every GLUE day, Peter van de Water printed a scaled Bloom model that visitors could win by simply entering their name, happy days.

After being selected for Rossana Orlandi’s Guiltless plastic awards in Milan, the Bloom outdoor lounge chair, is now selected for the Waste is Value exhibition in Hong Kong. Also curated and organized by the Milanese gallerist, Rossana Orlandi. The Bloom chair, designed for Dutch brand Banne, is made out of recycled plastic by Eco pixel.

The Sett CE is part of the Fantastic plastic exhibition at the Moscow design museum. A show about the use of recycled plastic in design. The Sett CE is a sustainable version, a development based on the original Sett design by Peter van de Water.

Op 18, 19 en 20 september open ik de deuren van mijn ontwerp studio voor de eerste editie van Glue Amsterdam, een verbindende en inspirerende design-route door Amsterdam. De route vormt voor mij een mooie aanleiding om stil te staan bij het feit dat ik dit jaar 20 jaar werk als zelfstandig meubel- en productontwerper.

In mijn studio laat ik een overzicht zien van 20 jaar werk, van het idee tot aan het gerealiseerde product. Dit aan de hand van 3D schaalmodellen en in print met een verzameling toelichtingen op ontwerpen die ik maakte voor verschillende meubelmerken. Het overzicht schetst de ontwikkeling van mijn handschrift en de groeiende focus op meer duurzame producten. Het winnen van de Dutch Design Award in 2019 met Gispen en een team specialisten voelde als een mooie bevestiging.

Tijdens Glue toon ik niet alleen bestaande ontwerpen, zoals de succesvolle Gustav serie voor Label vandenberg. Er zal ook nieuw werk gepresenteerd worden, zoals de duurzaam geproduceerde outdoor stoel Bloom. Een ontwerp uit gerecycled kunststof voor het nieuwe Nederlandse merk Banne. De Bloom is al doorgedrongen tot de finale van de duurzame plastic prijs van de fameuze Milanese galeriehoudster Rosana Orlandi.

Daarnaast toon ik ook de nieuwste ontwerpen die ik maakte voor Cascando, het merk waarvoor ik vanaf het begin van mijn loopbaan heb mogen ontwerpen.

Mijn studio is op 18, 19 en 20 september van 10 tot 17 uur te bezoeken.

It is an honour to be asked to join the jury for the first edition of the sustainable interior design awards organized and initiated by Flinders. An award for the best sustainable product and the best sustainable brand in the field of home & living design.
The award is for products and brands which are now active and available in the market. Flinders is the biggest online sales platform from the Netherlands and Belgium and has a leading and growing focus on sustainability. The Award will be presented Augustus 21.

This January, Label vandenberg launched the new “Easy” chair, designed by Peter van de Water. Besides the introduction of this new design, a number of previously made designs by Peter van de Water, where presented. This year the booth was designed by Dutch designer, Floris Hovers.

For me, 2019 was a very special year, both private and professionally. As a designer I had a productive year, with numerous new designs to be commissioned. I look forward to seeing these new designs presented at the IMM in Cologne, the Salone in Milan, Design district in Rotterdam and at Orgatec in Cologne. ( The first new design to be presented will be my “Easy” chair for Label van den Berg at the IMM Cologne. )

A big highlight was winning the Dutch Design Award with Gispen for the Sett CE sofa. This sustainable re-development was a collaboration of a team of experts from different fields of expertise. ( Searious business, 10XL, TU Delft, Marcel van Gaalen engineering. )

The award resulted in the invitation by His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen to be their guest during the so-called “excellence lunch”. This lunch hosts a number of selected award winners in the fields of science, culture, sports and buisnes and I can say I truly enjoyed the experience and the interesting conversations at the table.

Last year strengthened my belief in the responsibility we share to produce as sustainable as possible and it motivates me to keep on working towards a more sustainable industry. By focussing on what we can do, instead on what we can't do. I take pride in the fact, that I was able to incorporate 'a best effort obligation to produce sustainable' in my royalty contract for a new client. ( A result of this approach is a new outdoor chair to be presented at the Salone, made out of recycled plastic with the matching recycle logo placed prominently on the bottom. This to ensure the product can be easily recycled in the future. )

Let us keep on addressing, designing and producing more and more sustainable, and make this the “The new normal”.

Yesterday, 7 November, I had the honour to be invited by His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen, to be a guest at Noordeinde Palace for the so-called "excellence lunch". A fantastic experience and an inspiring group of awarded people from science, culture, business, sports etc. All thanks to the won Dutch Design Award, with the Sett CE sofa designed for Gispen. Of course I was there on behalf of Gispen (Sarah Schiffer in particular). And of course also on behalf of all other parties that contributed to the creation of this sustainable sofa, Searious Business, 10XL, TU Delft and Marcel van Gaalen engineering. (And yes, the food was delicious.)

During a festive evening in the city of Eindhoven, the annual and prestigious Dutch Design Awards were announced.
The Sett CE sofa, designed by Peter van de Water for Gispen, won the award in the category “best product”. The award-winning Sett CE design is made for 95% of recycled material (CE stands for circular economy). The sofa has a 3D-printed base, made out of recycled plastic and recycled comfort foam. 
The plastic used for the base, can in the future be used as new printing material.

The jury on Sett CE: "This is an example of the new aesthetic standard in circular design. The sofa does not scream durability, but the reuse of materials has been silently incorporated into a timeless design.”

This is an award for innovation and collaboration. Specialists helping each other, working together to build a better, more responsible product. Sett CE is developed in collaboration with Searious buisness, TU Delft and 10XL.

5 years ago, on new years eve, I met one of my biggest youth heroes, Wubbo Ockels. A scientist and the first Dutch astronaut on the space shuttle. The “astronauts perspective”, seeing Earth as fragile as it is, changed him forever. He became an ambassador for new, sustainable techniques, creating awareness about the destructive impact of humans on the environment, creating climate change. He died of cancer, 5 Months after I met him on May 18, 2014. In a last video message he called Earth sick of cancer too. For me, he is a big inspiration, a big motivator, even 5 years after his death, to keep the focus on a more sustainable, balanced world.

This April the 58th edition of the Salone del Mobile in Milano took place. 
Peter van de Water once again visited Milan to get inspired and meet wonderful people. The Salone is all about celebrating design. 
Some personal favourites of Peter van de Water were, the Plusminus lamp by Stefan Diez for Vibia, an impressive job done on powering the light through a flexible textile belt. 
The “Soft” presentation by Arper, a very pleasant and calm presentation & Raf Simons’s textiles collection for Kvadrat. His presentation No Mans’ Land was a perfect combination between space and objects, making the textiles stand out. 

A personal highlight was seeing his Gispen Outline floor lamp, at Masterly
( the Dutch Pavilion ).

This January Label vandenberg introduced the new Gustav barstool at the IMM Cologne 2019 furniture fair. The Gustav barstool is the latest family member in the Gustav line. First in line was the successful Gustav fauteuil, witch was now presented with a new footrest. Besides the Gustav fauteuil, chair and barstool, Label vandenberg also presented the recently introduced Skiff sofa and fauteuil and the Carry side table. All designed by Peter van de Water.

At the IMM Cologne 2019 furniture fair, Label vandenberg presents the latest member of the Gustav family. Developing a new design is all about building, making models, improving and perfecting. Nothing can compete with real, full size models. This is still the most efficient and fastest way to develop a new design. Especial seating, you have to try the comfort, feel it. Visiting workshops and talking with craftsmen is also very inspiring, a win/win situation.
The Gustav family started with the successful Gustav Fauteuil. Now we have the fauteuil and dining chairs with two different legs, a footrest and now the barstool.

Looking back at 2018, I was surprised by the long list of new and introduced designs I made for well appreciated, old and new clients. I see it all as a result of the changes I have made in my work in the last few years, like moving into a new studio, which now feels like a second home. Stopping with interior design, gave me more time and energy for inspirational travels and furniture design.
A better balance between input and output, more focus on my biggest passion, designing furniture.
There also was more room for researching meaningful directions like sustainable design, reaching out to kindred sprits. This year, it all seemed to come together, in a very positive way. I am really looking forward to 2019, a year with inspiring collaborations, planned introductions, designs and travels to be made.

For Orgatec 2018, Peter van de Water designed the Cascando booth and presented two new coat stands called Fuse and Kendo. For the colors, materialization & styling of the booth, Peter van de Water collaborated with stylist & photographer Floor knaapen. A successful collaboration witch resulted in very positive feedback from visitors and proud agents on the floor.

Very happy with this interview in the latest Flinders magazine about my view on sustainable design. It tells my view on this very urgent matter. I talk about furniture design in relation to the life-span of a design or product, recycling, production etc. Shown in this article you see my Sett sofa for Gispen, witch can be 3d printed out of recycled plastic. Also mentioned is my new coat stand Kendo, made out of local wood and flat pack transported. Flinders is the biggest Online design shop in the Benelux and is now expanding to Germany.

This year, in addition to a number of new products, I was also asked to design Cascando's presentation. Very proud of my new products and on the booth design as it is now realized together with the Cascando team and Floor Knaapen as a stylist. Can not wait to see it! Orgatec starts at 23 October 2018, Cologne. The picture shows a detail of a new design, called Kendo.

During the upcoming Design District furniture fair in the iconic Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam. Label vandenberg will introduce Skiff, a new design by Peter van de Water. This fauteuil & sofa has a geometrical outer shell and a soft and inviting seat. Besides this introduction, Label vandenberg will show the complete Gustav fauteuil and dining chair range and side table Carry. So… thats a lot of designs by Peter van de Water :-)

During the 2018 Gcuc co-work conference, Alfabet furniture introduced product X. Product X is a modular table program, especially designed for co-work spaces and other public or semi public environments. During the Gcuc product X was not only presented, but also used by it’s visitors. The presentation was in collaboration with Corgan architects. Product X is designed by Peter van de Water.

Finally I can show you a sneak peek of product-X. A brand-new table program for alfabet furniture. The program is vast, and offers solutions for ( co ) work and meeting or break-out tables. Endless possibilities in size, function, material and accessories. 
The realization of product-X for alfabet furniture has been an adventurous journey. How many designers are given the opportunity to make a design for a California based startup in furniture, interesting to say the least. This April we will present our product-X at the GCUC convention in New York. Last week there was the fotoshoot by Floor Knaapen in San Diego. I hope to show you the results very soon.

At this years Imm in Cologne, Label vandenberg introduced 2 new designs by Peter van de Water. At first there is Gustav JR, a dining chair based on the successful Gustav fauteuil we introduced last year. This Gustav JR offers the same appealing looks combined with the wright comfort. The second design is Carry, a lightweight & mobile side table annex "side-tray". Form meets all function in this design, the legs form the handels and also fixate the tray in the frame. It results in a surprising but also very logical design. Ready to serve.

Sett is out there! Great to see so many Sett sofa's and fauteuils to be used in so many interior project by Sett's manufacturer Gispen and architects. Makes me really proud to see my design to be used in these great projects.

A year after we introduced the Gustav fauteuil for Label van den Berg, we can conclude it is doing really well. You can see the Gustav fauteuil in some of the most beautiful furniture shops, as you can see in the attached picture ( www.houtmerk.nl ). We also have added a new rotary foot to the design, so you can choose between 2 options. In January we will present Gustav JR, a dinning table chair based on the original Gustav fauteuil. It will be launched at the IMM in Cologne, looking forward to it!

It is always great to see your own designs being produced in a factory, even more if it is an unexpected surprise. During a recent tour in the factory with a new client, we came across these steel Basket tables, a design I made for Cascando. On the pictures you see them just before, and just after powder-coating. 

Welcome at my "happy place". As a young child I started making models, I guess I've never stopped... Whenever I make models, make new designs, I forget time, do not hear the music on my beloved Studio Brussels, the coffee gets cold. This is me in "the zone",  making models in my new studio, visualizing new ideas, with the garden doors opened... Life is good.

Proud to be nominated for the new Creative Heroes Awards, in the category, best collaboration. In our nominated project we are redeveloping my Sett sofa as I designed it for Gispen. Our goal is to make it out of 99% recycled and sustainable materials, keeping the product quality and product lifespan as high as it is now. Making a successful and high volume product this sustainable is a big step, and will hopefully inspire other producers and brands too. This is the future, right now, hedonistic sustainability. This project is a collaboration with Searious Business ( sustainability  ), Auping ( foam ), Marcelvangalen engineering, Gispen en myself. Fingers crossed.

I’ve just returned from a mind-blowing and inspiring trip to Japan, my first visit to this great place. I visited Tokyo, Kyoto and one of the famous art Islands, Naoshima where is enjoyed the musea designed by Tadao Ando. Perfection, detail, minimalism but also odd and strange, all of these thoughts come up, thinking about this trip. After this trip I have more reasons to go back then the number of reasons I had before I went. I’ll be back...

Object is a small design fair held on an old cruise ship called the ss Rotterdam. This ship with it's vintage looking interior is a unique decor giving this fair it's own atmosphere. In the Tuttobene presentation in the pool of this cruise ship, my Carry on big candleholders for New Duivendrecht were presented, what a cool location!

This January my Gustav fauteuil made it's international debut. After a successful introduction in the Netherlands, Label vandenberg presented Gustav during the IMM furniture fair in Cologne, Germany.

Every 2 years the Orgatec fair in Cologne is organized. At this world leading fair for office furniture, Dutch brand Cascando presented their latest design's. During this edition, we presented an upgrade of our Team modular seating system, adding Team light and Team private.

Came across this snapshot, I took it just after the opening of the store. Still happy with this design for Skatestore in Den Hague. I really like the balance in color, detail, horizontal lines and mix of materials.
